H&F Electrical Contractors Ltd (HFE) was responsible for delivering the full electrical installation for Thomond Village, a large-scale student accommodation project at University of Limerick (UL). The development consisted of 503 en-suite study bedrooms across 105 apartments in three, four, and five-storey blocks. In addition to the residential units, the project included the construction of:
- Entrance Pods
- Village Centre
- Laundry Building
- Managers Block
- Shower Rooms & Changing Rooms
- Retail Units
- All Associated External Works
Electrical Scope of Works
HFE provided a comprehensive electrical installation, ensuring seamless integration with UL’s existing campus infrastructure. The project required adjustments to existing site services and multiple connections into existing campus networks, including:
- LV Distribution– Power supply and electrical distribution throughout the
development. - Fire Alarm & Life Safety Systems– Fully integrated fire alarm installation,
ensuring compliance with safety regulations. - Security & Access Control– CCTV, intruder alarm, and door access systems,
providing enhanced security for student accommodation. - IT & Data Infrastructure– Installation of structured cabling to support voice and
data services across the complex. - External & Emergency Lighting– Providing energy-efficient lighting solutions for
pathways, entrances, and communal areas. - General Services & Small Power– Power distribution for study bedrooms, retail units, and communal spaces.
Accessibility & Compliance
Thomond Village was designed as a universally accessible facility, providing
accommodation for students with impaired mobility. The project achieved Disability
Access Certification, with HFE completing all the associated Electrical services.
Project Challenges & Solutions
As Thomond Village is centrally located within University of Limerick’s campus,
construction required careful coordination to minimise disruption to the university. Theproject involved:
- Multiple service connections to existing UL networks, including gas, water,
electricity, fire alarm, security, and IT infrastructure. - Working within a live university environment, ensuring student safety and
maintaining continuity of campus operations.
